For any industry that has to lift and move big objects, like manufacturing, construction, or storage, a jib crane can be a very useful piece of equipment. Nonetheless, as the equipment is meant to lift and move large objects, some precautions must be taken to guarantee that it is used safely to reduce risks to your employees and damage to the equipment. When doing any lifting operation, keep in mind health and safety laws, as well as the recommendations for the safe use of lifting equipment. You can also follow the safety manual given by the jib crane manufacturers in India which has all the safety precautions mentioned

Reason for popularity of Jib cranes

An overhead lifting tool called a jib crane is frequently employed in difficult, repetitive lifting tasks. Your production process can be greatly streamlined by using a jib crane. Their versatility allows them to be used in conjunction with overhead bridge cranes to increase output. The ergonomic design of jib cranes is one of its distinguishing features. Although they have a fairly straightforward construction, their capacities range from 250 pounds to 15 tonnes. As previously indicated, they simultaneously contribute to increased productivity and a decrease in workplace injuries for the same reason.

Best practices to safely operate a Jib crane

  • Clear the path of the crane movement

Prior to using the jib crane, make sure the whole path of movement is free of any objects, people, or other anything that could cause damage or injury in the event of an accident. Crane is a huge machinery and the path in which it operates must be cleared in advance.

  • Position the arm correctly

Prior to raising the weight, the jib crane arm must be precisely positioned with the hook over the load’s centre of gravity. Make sure the jib crane is only used to lift, move, and set things back down. Never use it to drag items around.

  • Lift and put the loads gently

Make sure you handle the cargo carefully when lifting and lowering it to avoid shock loads or the jib arm whipping, which might potentially harm the crane, shorten its lifespan, and even result in an injury.

  • Avoid making load swing

Avoid letting the load swing as the crane is rotating it since this could strain the hoist further and endanger the health and safety of anyone working nearby. Incorporate a tagline if required.

  • Make sure the operators are trained

Many companies make the serious mistake of not making sure that their employees are trained and aware of the limitations and capabilities of the crane in order to guarantee the equipment is operated safely. A non-trained operator could be extremely dangerous on the floor as he is likely to operate a crane in the most unsafe manner which could even cause fatal accidents.

  • Make sure there is no lack of inspection

Another thing that a lot of people forget to do is to maintain and inspect their lifting equipment. Despite the robust design of jib cranes, consumers are sometimes misled into believing that their favourite old and trustworthy lifting equipment will last forever and never break down. It’s true that jib cranes have a long lifespan as long as they receive regular maintenance and inspections.

  • General maintenance

To make sure your crane is in a safe operating state, regular checks of wire ropes and load chains are recommended. Contracts for preventative maintenance and routine servicing must be completed with jib crane manufacturers in Ahmedabad that undertake site inspections and testing on any loose lifting equipment.

A type of overhead lifting device that is commonly employed in smaller enterprises for specialised and repeated lifting duties is the Jib crane. All thanks to the jib crane manufacturers in India, these incredibly adaptable cranes can even be combined with overhead bridge cranes to boost output. Despite having a somewhat straightforward design, these cranes can lift up to 15 tonnes and 125 kg in some situations. They are attractive in a manufacturing setting because of their ergonomic design, which can increase worker productivity, reduce workplace injuries, and improve safety.

In this article, we will discuss the function and working of a jib crane, about its components as well as its types.

How do Jib cranes work?

This crane has a horizontal component that is frequently referred to as the boom or jib. An operational arm that projects horizontally from the crane is called a jib. The jib’s function is to provide support for a moveable hoist that is fastened to a floor-mounted pillar or wall. It is primarily used in industrial settings. Usually swinging in an arc, the jib is secured such that it allows for extra lateral movement. The jib, a tilted strut on the crane, serves as support for the fixed pulley lock.
In some cases, warehouse floors are equipped with cranes to assist in moving items from the ground to higher areas. There are cables directly on the load and multiple times around a set block on the load. The unconnected end of the cable is wound with a winding equipment or manually pulled.
The pulley system applies force to the load. As a result, the force exerted is increased by the length of wire that passes between two blocks. The mechanical advantage is the name of the product.

Components of a Jib crane

  • The reach- The beam that moves back and forth on the tram is horizontal. Another name for it is the boom. The boom on mast jib and freestanding crane types can rotate up to 360 degrees. In contrast, the amount of spin on a wall- or column-mounted crane produces 180–200 degrees of rotation.
  • Mast- This vertical beam, sometimes referred to as the pillar, serves as the boom’s support in mast- or freestanding-type systems.
  • Hoist- This moveable component’s job is to raise, move, and reduce the loads.
  • Trolley- Together with the hook on the boom, the trolley also holds the hoist, wires, wire rope and chains. The tram may move in three different ways: manually, mechanically, or pneumatically.
  • Electric collector rings- Added to the top or bottom of the mast, these components are also referred to as pneumatic airlines. This component’s job is to help with rotation. It also permits the boom to rotate continuously in a 360-degree circle.
  • Control Buttons- A push-button control system is used with motorised or air-powered jib devices. The trolley’s motion and the boom’s rotation are both assisted by the button controllers. The hoist’s raising and lowering operations are likewise managed by this controller. There are multi-speed control buttons on the trolleys and the hoist as well.
  • Hook Height- This describes the lift’s maximum height or lowest point. The hook can go higher the lower the overhead obstruction.
  • The rotation stop- This is the part of the crane that restricts how far it can move before running into neighbouring objects.

Types of Jib Cranes

Jib crane manufacturers in Ahmedabad make different types of jib cranes which are suitable for different purposes according to size, space and utilisation. There are basically 5 types of jib cranes which are

  • Articulating
  • Freestanding
  • Foundationless
  • Mast Type
  • Well Mounted

End of Travel (EOT) cranes are used across various industries daily. They deliver quality, speed, and accuracy when lifting, transporting, and loading materials. However, safety is the most important factor for crane operators in any work environment. That’s why limit switches are so essential; they provide an additional layer of protection that guarantees every operation runs smoothly and prevents dangerous levels of overloading or mishandling from occurring. In this blog post, we will look at the importance of limit switches in EOT Cranes and explain the available types and how they can be implemented in practically any industry setting.

What are Limit Switches, and why are they important in EOT Cranes?

Limit switches are safety devices used in electric overhead traveling (EOT) cranes to monitor the position of the hoist and trolley in a system. They are typically installed at each end of the crane’s bridge and come with detailed instructions on setting up and calibrating. The limit switch prevents the crane from exceeding its maximum travel distance, an important element of overall safety. These switches will detect when the crane reaches either end of its path and shut down power to certain components as appropriate, including motors that would drive it beyond its limits. This ensures that no part of the machine can operate beyond what has been programmed or allowed by law.

How do Limit Switches operate in EOT Cranes?

Limit switches are important to every end-of-travel (EOT) crane system. They ensure the safety and reliability of the operation by ensuring that the crane will not move past its designated travel limits. Limit switches are typically mounted on each side of the rail, at both ends of a bridge or rung, and around any curves in the track.

Each limit switch is attached to a contact device connected to control circuitry within the EOT crane system. When this contact device comes into contact with a mechanical stop, such as a fixed post or another object, it causes an electrical signal to be generated that tells the control circuitry to disengage power from whatever motion module was driving that particular direction movement. This prevents the crane from going further and keeps it within its pre-defined travel limits. Cranetech is one of the leading jib crane manufacturers in India , offering a wide range of jib cranes and jib crane accessories to customers across the country.

When the EOT crane reaches its designated limit, an indicator light can indicate this to the operator. This ensures that they are made aware of the crane’s position and helps them ensure they do not overreach their safe operational boundaries. Limit switches are crucial in ensuring that EOT cranes operate safely and reliably, so it is important to keep them well-maintained and tested regularly. Following these steps, operators can ensure that their EOT cranes remain safe and reliable.

Importance of Limit Switches in EOT Cranes

Limit switches play a critical role in ensuring the safety of personnel and equipment while operating an EOT crane. Here are some of the major ways they accomplish this:

  1. Limit switches are designed to detect changes in the movement of the cranes, which helps prevent collisions between different parts of the crane or other objects outside its vicinity. This is especially important when carrying heavy loads, as it reduces the risk of accidents caused by sudden movements or shifts in direction.
  2. By monitoring any motion that exceeds predetermined limits, limit switches help ensure that EOT cranes do not move beyond their operational range. This helps protect personnel and property from potential damage due to overloading or overreaching with the crane’s arm.
  3. Limit switches also detect any mechanical or electrical faults in the system, which allows operators to take corrective action before a breakdown occurs. This helps to avoid costly repairs and downtime for the crane, as well as reducing the risk of delays or other issues in operations.
  4. Finally, limit switches provide a means of manually controlling various features on an EOT crane from afar. This enables operators to modify settings or switch off functions remotely and safely, even if they are not physically present at the control station of the crane.

By combining all these features into one device, limit switches offer superior safety measures for personnel operating an EOT crane and those nearby. These safety systems are instrumental in ensuring the crane operates smoothly and without accidents.

The importance of limit switches in EOT cranes cannot be overstated, as they are essential to the safe operation and performance of these machines. Operators must be aware of the features and capabilities of their limit switch systems to identify potential risks and take corrective action quickly. This will ensure that everyone stays safe while operating the crane and minimize any potential problems or delays in operations.

Jib cranes are hugely popular not only in India but across the world and are deployed in almost all the industries which require cranes to lift loads. Jib crane manufacturers make cranes to cater the needs of different industries so that each and every penny spent on the cranes is worth it for the business owners. The reason for the popularity of jib cranes is that they are extremely safer to use in the workplaces which lets the employees work in a worry free environment and the productivity is increased indirectly. There are a lot of benefits of using jib cranes and some of them are discussed in detail below

1. Effectively helps in minimizing injuries

Employee, handler, and crane operator injuries are all too prevalent in warehouses these days, so it’s critical that, in addition to a skilled and experienced operator, the cranes used in the warehouse are also safe. Jibe cranes are noted for their safety and ability to reduce occupational accidents caused by lifting and handling goods and items, which account for the majority of industrial injuries. Employees are subject to strains, sprains, and other injuries while lifting weights beyond 22 kgs due to tripping, falling, and slipping, which jib cranes drastically minimize. Reduced injuries provide a safe and healthy working environment for employees, which boosts overall productivity.

2. Jib cranes are a big space-savers

Jib cranes are known for saving space since they are small and low in weight when compared to other industrial cranes. Jib cranes are primarily used at workplaces because of their compactness and efficiency and no other cranes are used as they take up large spaces. This saves a lot of room. Other cranes are larger in size and require more area to operate, therefore their deployment overcrowds the workplace. Overcrowding is a primary cause of many injuries among floor staff because it impedes their ability to move quickly and creates numerous obstacles.

3. Optimal design to reduce workplace injuries

Jib cranes have a fairly basic design, which makes them quite easy to grasp even for a new person at work. Whenever a machine is installed at a business, employees are given a training session in which they are educated in detail about how the equipment works and operates. Similarly, when Jib cranes are used, staffs find it exceedingly simple to learn the crane’s operations and operation due to its basic design. The inspection crew may also check each item with patience because there are fewer parts to inspect due to the fewer components involved in the crane’s construction.

The cranes may be examined swiftly and effectively in this manner, reducing the risks and dangers of any possible injuries. The trainers can swiftly explain how things function, and the operations personnel can quickly grasp the straightforward design. It’s a win-win situation for everyone at work.

4. Use of very less or fewer components

Manufacturers of jib cranes strive to create cranes with an ideal design and high performance. Jib cranes are meticulously constructed with all safety regulations in mind, which is why they are equipped with as few parts as possible in order to successfully reduce workplace injuries. Jib cranes may function at their optimum even when fewer components are employed in their construction, and this is frequently the case because fewer parts correspond to fewer breakdowns.

The more pieces in a crane, the more likely it is to break down and require maintenance, which is why jib cranes have fewer components, enhancing efficiency and lowering overall maintenance costs. When an operating crane breaks down during an operation, it can result in injury to the operator as well as others close. Jib cranes lower the total risk of injury, providing a safe and secure working environment for employees.

Manufacturing and storage units need a crane as an essential tool. Depending on the tasks, available space, and amount of weight to lift, various types of cranes are used in buildings. One among the many types of cranes is a jib crane.

The jib crane is supported by a pillar which can be fixed either on the floor or on the wall. The jib rests on the pillar with an attached hoist. The hoist moves in order to move the load up and down as per requirements.

The hoist attached to the jib has a chain or rope. Both the chain and rope hoists work nearly the same. There is a lift wheel or drum with the hoist where the weight is placed and the rope or chain are used to wrap it safely.

The crane can work on electrical or mechanical energy whichever is available. Sometimes, the cranes are also operated manually where the weight is not extremely high. According to the jib crane manufacturers in India, the jib cranes are quite versatile and can fit in various sites.

Let’s know more about the types of jib cranes and how they work.

Types of Jib Cranes

Any crane that has a rotating jib with an attached hoist supported by a vertical pillar can be categorized as a jib crane. Jib cranes are very versatile and can be used in military and commercial ships in addition to construction sites. The floor mounted jib cranes that support themselves are very popular in many industries. The cranes are quite easy to handle and save a lot of time. Let’s understand the working of all jib cranes.

1. Floor-mounted Type

A vertical mast stands on the concrete surface to support the crane. These cranes are also called self supporting jib cranes. The jib rests on the vertical pillar with an attached hoist.

Why these cranes are so [popular is because they make the work easy for other cranes. The hoist can lift and lower much of the weight and that reduces load of other main cranes. The crane is manually operated with a 360 degrees rotation.

2.Wall mounted Type (fixed)

The crane is mounted on the wall horizontally on a RCC column bracket. The mounting offers rotation of upto 200 degrees, but the area near the mounting is well covered. These type of cranes are space saving and can be installed even if there is less floor space available in your organization. The crane offers no obstruction  at floor level and that makes it a great fit for compact spaces or where the floor space is occupied or unfit for installation.

3. Wall mounted Type (traveling)

These are similar to the fixed wall mounted cranes with the only difference that these can cover relatively large areas. Since the mounting is not fixed, the crane can cover a lengthwise area in the building. The crane causes no floor obstruction and works great even if there is little or no usable floor space.

As the name traveling crane suggests, the crane moves along specially designed columns fitted in the wall. The crane offers no rotation since it runs along a track formed with columns. The wall mounted traveling crane might not be a great fit if you need the crane to rotate for any task.

The jib cranes are of great help no matter how large or small your manufacturing unit is. The cranes come in a variety of performance levels and you can pick the best one just by following the given link.

Jib Cranes are a quick and efficient way to shift objects from one place to another. Jib in Jib Crane is a horizontal beam attached to a support by which we can move objects in a circular area. Use of Jib Crane improves the speed and efficiency of work, especially in a tight and confined area. Jib crane manufacturers in India suggest the below tips to choose the right jib crane for your industry.

Types Of Jib Cranes

There are different types of Jib Cranes available in the market to choose from but here we will discuss three broad categories of Jib Cranes. Also, all Jib Cranes have their own characteristics and you can customise them according to your needs.

FLOOR-MOUNTED JIB CRANES

Floor-Mounted Jib Cranes are 360° rotatable and hence they cover a large area. Freestanding Jib Crane and Mast-Style Jib Cranes fall under this category. The freestanding system is more expensive than other Floor-Mounted Jib Cranes because it is specifically designed for heavy usage. Floor-Mounted Cranes are a good option if floor space is available, else you have to look into other options given below.

WALL-MOUNTED JIB CRANES

Wall-Mounted Jib Cranes is a better option if there is no availability of floor space. They provide 200° rotation and can handle a load of up to 5 tons. Surely, they are not as heavy-duty as Floor-Mounted but they are a perfect pick for crowded areas. Wall-Mounted Jib Crane also has two types: Cantilever and Tie Rod supported. The cantilever is easy to install and provide the greatest amount of clearance. Whereas Tie Rod supports are economical than other Wall-Mounted Jib Cranes.

ARTICULATING JIB CRANES

There are various types of cranes available in the market. Out of all, the jib crane is the most popular due to its functionality. Across industrial sectors, it is utilized in numerous types of applications. For each purpose, various types of jib cranes are available in the market. Some of the most popular jib cranes are mobile jib cranes, wall-mounted jib cranes, mast type jib cranes, wall bracket jib cranes and free-standing jib cranes. To understand that which is the perfect jib crane for your industry, you have to approach leading jib crane manufacturers in India.

What is a jib crane?

Overhead cranes are widely used in the manufacturing industry. They need support from a jib crane to carry out functions efficiently. Jib cranes have two major hoisting winches. In order to lift the weight, they can either be applied individually or together. It astonishingly simplifies and paces up the production process. However simple jib cranes may look, but they are sturdy and can lift capacities from 125 kgs to 15 tons. Jib cranes can fit into any production environment since they are ergonomically designed.  They are essential for enhancing safety, maximizing worker productivity and minimizing workplace injuries. From the variety of jib cranes available in the market, which one is the best for your industry? Every jib crane has different capabilities, advantages and disadvantages. You can discuss your requirements with the jib crane manufacturers. They can guide you about which crane you should opt for.

Freestanding jib cranes:

These widely used jib cranes are perfect for indoor and outdoor use. They increase the efficiency of larger bridge crane systems and individual work cells by providing the right type of support. Even at docks and marinas, they are widely used. Freestanding jib cranes are perfect for indoor assembly operations and machining. Their salient features are:

  •         Span up to 25 mtr
  •         Up to 15 tons load capacity
  •         360° rotation
  •        Boom heights (distance from the floor to top overhead support) up to 12 mtr

In terms of mounting and installation, there are three types of freestanding jib cranes.

Base-plate mounted: This is the most popular freestanding jib crane design. These plates are easy to install. A base plate is bolted on top of an unbreakable concrete foundation to protect the mast. After that, the mast is reinforced with gussets.

Foundation/insert mounted: These mounts come with a welded steel plate at the bottom of the mast. During the entire process of the first-pour concrete footing, the steel plate is anchored.

Sleeve-insert mounted: In this mount, a sleeve is welded to a steel plate. During the first-pour in a concrete footing, this mount anchors the sleeve and places it properly. It gets support through the second pour. After that, the mast is placed inside the sleeve. The third step comprises levelling it and welding it in place. If you wish to relocate the jib system without damaging the mast, this is a perfect choice.

Out of all, jib cranes have the maximum load lifting capacity, rotation and longest spans. That is why they are costlier in comparison to other jibs. Since it provides the special foundation required for anchor, protects the crane and supports the load during a lift, it finds a permanent space in several manufacturing units.

Foundationless jib cranes: It is chiefly used for indoor use. They are similar to slab-mounted freestanding jibs and are bolted to 150 mm unbreakable concrete. What makes them attractive is that they can work wonders even without a special poured foundation. If the area is suitable as directed by the jib crane manufacturer, these cranes can be installed at any place in a facility. It is easy to relocate them within the facility. In comparison to other jibs, they can be quickly installed. Have a look at some of their striking features:

  •         Spans up to 3-5 mtr
  •         Lift load up to 500 kgs
  •         360° rotation
  •         Boom heights up to 6 mtr
  •         Easily portable
  •         Easy installation
  •         Cost-effective

These features attract manufacturers to choose foundation jib cranes for specific applications.

Mast Type Jib Cranes: These cranes again do not need a special foundation. They can work with 150mm of unbreakable concrete support. An already built overhead support beam or structure can be utilized to provide extra support to these cranes. Below are some features that make mast type jib cranes attractive.

  •         Spans up to 3-12 mtr
  •         Lift load up to 10 tons
  •         360° rotation
  •         Boom heights up to 12 mtr

These cranes come with two cantilever design options. However, based on the overhead obstruction types, it may or may not be present.

  1. Full Cantilever: When there is no overhead obstruction, you can utilize these cantilevers. In order to use the crane to its maximum lifting capacity and get clearance underneath, all you have to do is to mount the boom to the top of the mast.
  2. Drop Cantilever: If there are overhead obstructions, then drop cantilever is the best option. It comes with side-plate connections which enable the boom to be drop mounted at a height the operator desires. By the time, the obstruction situated below the top of the mast can be cleared.

Wall-mounted jib cranes:  When support columns or structurally appropriate walls are available, these jib cranes can be utilized in individual bays. If there is an already built monorail or overhead bridge crane, these cranes can also function as a supplement.

There are two ways these jib cranes can be structured to mount a wall or building support system.

Cantilever: They assure maximum clearance above and below the boom. Jib cranes with wall-mounted cantilever provide the full-cantilever layout.

Tie-rod supported: If you are looking for a cost-friendly way for hoist coverage along building columns or walls, this is the best option you can get. It comes with a single tie-rod and a wall bracket to support the boom which ensures that the hoist gets full movement down the length of the beam.

These cranes save a lot of space and that is why preferred by many manufacturers. They can work without floor or foundation support. It provides utmost clearance under and above the boom since it can be installed close to the bottom of the lowest ceiling obstruction. To ensure that the production process remains undisrupted, these cranes are designed in a way that their layouts can swing around the objects, under any overhead crane. If required, they can fold out to clear the way for overhead cranes. Let’s glance at their salient features:

  •         Spans up to 2-9 mtr
  •         Lift load up to 5 tons
  •         180°-200° rotation

The only drawback of these jib systems is that they do not allow 360° movement. For withstanding the loads, they require a column or support. Therefore, if you are willing to install wall-mounted jib cranes in your facility, you will require a structural engineering survey and approval before the installation.

Articulating jib cranes: What sets these jib cranes apart from traditional jib cranes with one boom are two swivel arms that can lift loads around the corners and columns. They can easily reach under or into machinery or containers. It has an elementary boom arm which enables it for 200° swivel. Along with providing a movement closer to the mast or column, they provide a maximum coverage area. Articulating jib cranes can either be wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted, floor-mounted on a track system or bridge. These jibs come to the rescue in a situation where traditional jibs are unable to place load accurately or mark load around obstructions since they can rotate close to the mast, open doors or building columns. Some of the features of these cranes are:

  •         Spans up to 5 mtr
  •         Lift load capacity up to 1 ton
  •         360° rotation for both freestanding and ceiling-mounted systems
  •         For wall-mounted system a special provision for 180° inner arm and 360° outer arm

This crane is not suitable for heavier duty and frequent lifts. It is not designed to lift greater load and their span too is limited.

It is always wise to state requirements to the jib crane manufacturers before purchasing the jib crane. With their experience and insights, they will be able to guide you which one is the best for you.
